Why Does a Burnt Hit Happen?
There's nothing worse than a harsh, acrid burnt hit from your vape. It ruins the flavor, irritates your throat, and usually signals the beginning of the end for your coil. But many burnt hits are completely avoidable — they're usually caused by a few common mistakes that are easy to fix once you know what to look for.
A burnt hit occurs when the wick inside your coil (typically made from organic cotton) dries out and gets scorched by the heating element. This can happen because the wick hasn't absorbed enough e-liquid before firing, the wattage is too high, or the coil is simply worn out.
Step 1: Always Prime Your Coil Before First Use
Priming is the single most important step that beginners skip. When you install a brand new coil, the cotton wick inside is completely dry. If you fire the device immediately, you'll scorch the wick before it has a chance to saturate — and that burnt taste can be permanent even after the wick wets out.
How to prime a coil:
- Apply 3–5 drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton wicking holes on the side of the coil.
- Add a drop or two down the center opening of the coil head.
- Install the coil, fill your tank, and let it sit for at least 5–10 minutes before vaping.
- Take a few gentle "dry" puffs (without pressing the fire button) to help draw liquid into the wick.
Step 2: Break In Your Coil Gradually
Even after priming, starting at full wattage is too aggressive for a new coil. Start at the lower end of your coil's recommended wattage range and take a few puffs. Gradually increase the wattage over 10–15 minutes until you reach your preferred setting. This "break-in" process helps the cotton fully saturate and heat evenly.
Step 3: Don't Chain Vape
Chain vaping — taking puff after puff without pausing — is one of the fastest ways to burn out a coil. Each puff vaporizes some of the e-liquid in the wick, and the cotton needs time to re-absorb liquid from the tank. If you fire the coil before it's re-saturated, you'll get a dry hit.
Rule of thumb: Wait at least 15–30 seconds between puffs, especially if you're vaping at higher wattages.
Step 4: Keep Your Tank Filled
Running your tank too low on e-liquid is a surprisingly common cause of burnt hits. When the liquid level drops below the wicking holes on your coil, the cotton can no longer draw from the tank effectively. Aim to refill your tank when it reaches the one-quarter mark.
Step 5: Use the Right E-Liquid for Your Device
Using a high-VG (thick) e-liquid in a device designed for thinner 50/50 juice can starve the wick because the liquid moves too slowly. Always match your e-liquid's VG/PG ratio to your coil and device type:
- Pod systems and MTL coils: 50/50 or 60/40
- Sub-ohm coils: 70/30 or higher VG
Step 6: Stay Within Recommended Wattage
Every coil has a wattage range printed on it (e.g., 30–60W). Exceeding the maximum wattage vaporizes e-liquid faster than the wick can re-absorb it, leading to dry hits and a shortened coil life. Stay within the recommended range — sweet spot is usually in the middle.
Signs Your Coil Needs Replacing
- Persistent burnt or muted flavor despite a full tank
- Gurgling or flooding issues that don't resolve
- Noticeably reduced vapor production
- Darkened, gunked-up cotton visible through the coil
How Long Should a Coil Last?
With good habits, most coils last anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks depending on how frequently you vape and what e-liquids you use. Sweetened e-liquids, while delicious, caramelize on coils faster and reduce lifespan significantly. If you want longer coil life, consider less sweetener-heavy flavors occasionally.
Final Thoughts
Avoiding burnt hits comes down to patience and good habits: prime properly, break in gradually, don't chain vape, and keep your tank filled. These small adjustments will save you money on coils and make every vaping session noticeably more enjoyable.
